Hugh Fleming

Hugh Fleming - Foundation Governor

I have been living in Kennington now for three years and a volunteer at St Swithun’s School for the past year. This has been a rewarding experience, as I have seen the school in action and witnessed at first hand the progress made by the children I met. I am also a volunteer in the Kennington library and treasurer of the Friends of Kennington Library charity, with the aim of fostering literacy which is key to encouraging lifelong learning.

I firmly believe that education in the early years is critical to providing opportunities to do well in later years. I studied modern languages at Oxford University and feel strongly that they have been sidelined recently as an educational discipline by the focus on maths and science. They open up channels of communication which make travelling abroad more fulfilling as well as enhancing the appreciation of foreign cultures.

My career has encompassed travel, property management and financial services at a senior level in mainly governance roles and, although I have never worked in a school, I look forward to new challenges as a governor and to applying the experience I have gained over a lifetime for the benefit of the whole school community.
